EDU564 Contemporary Trends in Mental Health, Appraisal, Intervention and Research

This course is designed to familiarize students with contemporary approaches to appraisal and intervention in mental health practice and to introduce relevant “cutting-edge” trends in research. Underscoring the importance of an ecological and multi-culturally informed practice model, the course begins by deconstructing the history of mental health practice. Beginning in the 17th century and ending with contemporary trends, the various paradigms shaping mental health delivery are considered. More contemporary topics include: psychiatric genetics and epigenetics, the microbiome, neuroimaging, developmental psychopathology, mindfulness practices, EDMR, geropsychology, empirically supported therapies, and psychopharmacology.
